Once again, LG comes up with an unprecedented milestone of producing the world’s first 3D TV, which possessed the greatly searched for THX 3D display certification, through its launching of 55LW9800 passive 3DTV 1080p Nano Full LED model. As this very slim 3D TV class holds compatibility with LG Smart TV platform, it showcases of wireless access to various internet applications minus the usage of a computer.

LG 55LW9800 was able to obtain this certification by means of undergoing more than 400 THX experiments which assessed left and right eye pictures for hue precision, cross-talk, viewing angles together with visual processing display. Since LG 55LW9800 has passed those tests, this 3DTV model absolutely can bring constant true gamma, luminance as well as color temperature.

Design

Even though LG’s LW9800 series does not look as elegant as its leading contenders namely Sony XBR-HX929 or Samsung’s UND8000 in terms of monolithic style and eye-catching, all-picture display, you will get amazed of its distinct-sheet appearance wherein the 1-inch-width bezel along with the ample smooth screen, are faced with a transparent-edged frame, plastic pane, that is quite thin of 1-inch panel depth. Furthermore, the 55LW9800 model appears finesse in style from its swivel stand topped with glass to the top of its slim,
gem-resembling panel.

Remote control and menus

Remote size (LxW): 9.2×1.8 inches
QWERTY keyboard: No
Illuminated keys: 5
IR device control: No
Menu item explanations: No
Onscreen manual: No
Other: Includes secondary motion-based RF remote control

In an effort to be within track of its top TV rivals, LG made a revision of its menu system layout on the 2011 Smart TV-compatible model to highlight the apps along with streaming services besides image and sound configurations. Furthermore, the functionality of its secondary Magic Motion remote has been broadened, wherein the viewer can now choose on menu options through motion control instead of thumb-clicking the box. This will definitely be operational on each display in the system similar to Nintendo Wii controller.

Key TV Features

This LCD TV considered as the flagship of LG appears expensive to some extent due to its utilization of a full-array local dimming LED backlight. LG is the lone manufacturer to reveal the quantity of dimmable zones it makes use of which are 216 in all. To solve the 2010 LG local dimmers uniformity issues, this model utilizes backlight’s Nano nomenclature. This means that the LEDs constitute the “thin film” which gives a further consistent light distribution.

Furthermore, the LW9800 utilizes the passive 3D technology of LG which is recognized as “Film Pattern Retarder” or FPR, an LCD panel technology. It is a polarizing film covering the TV panel which permits the left and the right eye to have a vision of every next line to form the two images needed for the 3D picture in Full HD 1080p, while the viewer wears the unique lightweight glasses.

The LG In Plane Switching or IPS Panels bring bright along with clear action images because of the liquid crystals’ fast response time, the same thing with the panel driving technology. For conditions like wide viewing angles, the IPS panels, which are firm and robust, also deliver precise and constant hue and enhanced contrast.

Take pleasure in remarkable deepness together with smoother, crisper pictures, and a lucid image from nearly any angle with lightness, more affordable as well as battery complimentary glasses with LG’s THX 3D Certified Display.

Nano Full LED delivers the viewer a more vivid, smoother, spotless image as compared in the past. Utilizing highly-developed LED technology, it provides marvelously elegant 2D and 3D (due to 2D to 3D conversion feature), together with an incredibly thin, classy layout.

Smart TV lets the viewer to have connection to boundless contents, thousands of movies, customizable applications, videos as well as the top of the internet, every single one prearranged in an easy to use interface. Access your network by means of the built-in Wi-Fi adapter or through a network cable.

TruMotion 480Hz technology allows the viewer to watch sports, video games along with high-speed movement with virtually free from motion blur.

Full HD 1080p brings it better image quality as against usual HDTV. You will be able to view details and hues not seen in the past.

Pros

LG’s transparent, beveled edges provide the television a gem-resembling feeling.

The swivel stand topped with glass shows sharpness.

The design of LG’s menu looks remarkable.

The 2011 Magic Motion Remote provides trouble-free navigation of menus.

LG’s collection of Premium streaming services and apps are essential.

Two THX modes are available for 2D and a third for 3D.

TruMotion 480Hz brings motion display that is free from blur.

Shows brilliant color, shadow detail, and correctly handles 1080p/24 sources.

Passive 3D image quality has lesser crosstalk and is more vivid than active 3D.

Four pairs of 3D glasses are included in the package.

Well-designed Smart TV Internet portal makes use of the built-in Wi-Fi streaming.

Cons

Expensive due to Full-Array Local Dimming feature.

With lighter black levels and reduced gamma in the picture modes.

Screen displays unsatisfactorily in ambient light and blooming seems quite ordinary.

Conclusion

The LG LW9800 LED TV series can definitely bring you a THX Certified, 1080p Cinema 3D experience at the comfort of your home while enjoying the superb image quality of LG’s NANO Full LED display technology.

Of the five people asked for the best “Overall 3D TV Experience”, four selected LG Cinema 3D as against its top contenders; thus, making this LG’s flagship as the people’s choice for this category.

The HDTVs that also provide “full-array with local dimming” feature are the following: Sony XBR-HX929, Sharp’s Elites and LG 55LW9800. Among those three, LG comes out on top since it is the lone HDTV with passive 3D TV capability with the mixture of local dimming, brightness, crosstalk and realistic benefits of polarized 3D glasses.

You will be able to purchase your very own state-of-the-art LG 55LW9800 Cinema 3D LED HDTV for the best price of $3,099.00 only at Amazon.com including free shipment across United States only.

So, if you are craving for passive 3D and have enough money to spend, the LG 55LW9800 model seems appealing to have in your own living room.

Furthermore, this LCD TV shows great colors with remarkable black levels and excellent matte finish. It has viewing angle that is much improved than the Samsung. The internet apps also function exceptionally.

The Vizio XVT553SV is well-publicized for bringing the “ultimate HDTV experience” as well as among the “top 55 inch HDTVs 2010” with its 55 inch TruLED with Smart Dimming HDTV.

The display of Vizio XVT553SV’s backlit illumination provides the viewer an enormous depth together with clearness of the various hues as well as the resolution in high definition with greater than 2 million pixels. Another plus would be the 240 Hz refresh rate which brings 240 scenes every second; thus, offering the viewer razor-sharp images with fine clear color.

Design

From 5 inches before, the cabinet depth of the XVT553SV is now measured at 3 inches which looks sufficient to give space for the 120 zones of LED backlighting with the local dimming feature of Vizio for other extremely dark black levels. However, a glowing logo of Vizio appears upon start up of this LCD TV model which cannot be deactivated.

The silver-colored speaker bar mixed with all-black hue make the latest layout of this model very noticeable. In addition, it establishes some rounded edges on the bezel side (2.2 inches) as well as at the middle part of the speakers and the length of the oval base.

This TV weighing 77.16 pounds, has a stand that can swivel and provide good support to the TV. But if the TV does not include a stand, it weighs 76.06 pounds.

Located behind the left bezel, the silver control panel provides access to the Quick Menu which includes the primary functions and settings for fine-tuning like input sources, channel select, set power off together with volume change. Aside from giving the viewer additional functions, the remote control also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that includes 39 keys, arrow pad and 4 other keys identified through 4 various colors. Moreover, this helps the viewer to access easily some Web services like Twitter and Facebook.

Superior image quality, immersive virtual high definition audio along with first-rate wireless internet connectivity through integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11n

Lots of inputs and connections for high definition display such as 4 HDMI, Ethernet, 3 USB and more

VIZIO’s Bluetooth VUR1O remote with slide-out QWERTY keypad utilizes infrared to manage audio/video equipment linked to the HDTV like DVD and Blu-ray players, VCRs, audio gadgets, cable and satellite set-top boxes, DVRs and other apparatus.

55-inch HDTV featuring Full 1080P High Definition resolution (above 2 million pixels) and support for 1.06 billion colors, displaying very clear and detailed razor-sharp image

Features VIZIO TruLED and Smart Dimming technologies offering backlit illumination of the screen producing spectacular clearness with brilliant color that manage LED blocks to generate 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio

Power consumption of up to 50% less energy versus the top HDTVs

178-Degree horizontal/vertical viewing angle produces crisp as well as lucid image with 100% visibility inside the room

Two built-in 15-watt speakers brings 100% perception of sound within the room through SRS TruSurround HD to deliver immersive virtual high-definition surround sound and SRS TruVolume to balance dynamics to limit volume inconsistencies between programming

VIZIO Internet Apps (VIA) allows easy access to the internet, stream movies and television programs, listen to music and obtain the up-to-the-minute news, sports and weather. VIA gets in tandem with Amazon Instant Video, Flickr, Netflix, Rhapsody, Twitter, VUDU and Yahoo TV Widgets pre-loaded on the television, all set for screen display upon one touch of a button via remote control.

ECO HD surpasses the present Energy Star Guidelines by 50% below Energy Star 4.1 guidelines, saving you cash on your utility bills whereas lessening the environmental effect

The backlight of the display is environmentally-friendly since LED backlights has no mercury, an ecologically unsafe element

Hulu Plus will be available to Vizio this fall. Currently, the XVT553SV model has access to the following streaming media: Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Rhapsody subscription music service (exclusive), Vudu video and Pandora. Other accessible streaming options are SyncTV Kids and Web Video while YouTube and CinemaNow are not yet offered by this series.

Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon VOD normally display the anticipated image quality, wherein the several picture controls are available – including image modes, backlight level as well as highly developed controls such as dejudder, but exclusive of disparity, vividness and shade among others. Those streaming services are considered by Vizio as a distinct input which is a direct contrary to the other televisions’ capability to run other Apps concurrently. Consequently, this permits the viewer to tweet or even access Facebook even as watching Netflix, for an instance. This can be regarded as television multitasking.

At this moment, the entire number of non-streaming widgets is 30 inclusive of 13 Yahoo widgets with 3 games, eBay, Facebook, iMemories, a Wikipedia search, together with three varied weather services. Some dubious widgets are accessible too like an information service for the United Way of Greater St. Louis, and the local news, sports, and weather for Raleigh-Durham, N.C. Numerous games while MediaBox permits connectivity to Picasa accounts.

Cons

Not capable of processing well 1080p/24 content

Unsatisfactory viewing experience at off angles

Less image setting adjustments as compared to other state of the art HDTVs

Conclusion

Vizio was able to create a status for producing flat-screen televisions which bring enormous importance for the cash. The exceptional image quality, favorable layout, variety of features tempered with practicality in its costing, the Vizio XVT553SV has been included presently in the list of 55-inch LED-based LCD HDTVs wherein it is considered among the best worth, purchasable at Amazon to the amount of $1,699.99. This product meets the criteria for the TV Low Price Guarantee, Free Shipping, and Free 30 Day TV Returns available only at Amazon. More than a hundred buyers have already purchased their own Vizio XVT553SV at Amazon wherein almost 90% is the average rating given by those satisfied customers.

There are no other televisions in the market which provide similar features, image quality, and other essential aspects for this product value. Some high-end plasma TVs may perhaps bring identical benefits, although further heat is dissipated resulting to greater power consumption. Assuming that this Vizio series lasts long minus the problems, it can be regarded as perfect TV; thus, more Vizio TVs would be highly recommended for future use.

The PND7000 series is the former Samsung flagship selection which includes three models:
Samsung PN51D7000 – 51 inches
Samsung PN59D7000 – 59 inches
Samsung PN64D7000 – 64 inches

PND7000 VS. PND8000

While each of the PND7000 models are relatively similar, there are some significant differences between the PND7000 and the new PND8000 series:

The PND8000 has a swiveling chrome quad-shaped stand, while the stand for the PND7000 series has a rectangular base that is easier to maneuver and is more aesthetically pleasing to some people. Thus, the PND8000 series may be more ideal for wall mounting, while the PND7000 series may be more suited for use with the stand.

The PND7000 series does not include 3D glasses, while the PND8000 series includes 2 free pair. However, these glasses are not always included in the box, so sometimes they must be claimed online through Samsung’s website after purchasing the television, similarly to a rebate.

Another difference is the Dynamic Contrast Ratio which stands on 25,000,000:1 on the PND8000 series and only 15,000,000:1 on the PND7000. However for the common untrained eye, this factor is not noticeable.

The PND8000 has an upgraded remote that is not sold with the PND7000, which includes a flip-over QEWRTY keyboard and a plethora of new functions.

The PND8000 also has the capability to interface with an optional Skype camera, and includes an integrated proprietary web browser, both of which are not included in the PND7000 series.

Unlike the PND7000 series, the PND8000 televisions include a new feature called Local Contrast Enhancer (LCE), which automatically adjusts the contrast of various areas of the display independently to provide an optimal picture on every part of the screen.

Simplified Design

While many 3D plasmas are incorporating complex design schemes and oddly shaped stands, the Samsung PND7000 retains a classic stand design that is sturdy and easy to set up. The color of the bezel is an illustrious Brushed Metal, which has been kept the same in the PND8000 series. The PND7000 appears to be more spacious than other 64” models because of the new Samsung Plus One design, which offers a slimmer bezel, thereby increasing the usable area of the display.

Enjoyable 2D & 3D Performance

The PND7000 provides a full 1080p HD viewing experience, which is complimented by 600hz subfield motion technology that facilitates enhanced pixel responses and screen refreshes to provide optimal performance during fast-paced scenes. With a mega dynamic contrast ratio of 15,000,000:1 and an incredible response time of only 0.001ms, you’re guaranteed to catch every moment of the action without any motion blur. The PND7000 can quickly be converted into a 3D powerhouse that will let you enjoy Blu-Ray movies, video games, and even television programing in 3D using a pair of Samsung active 3D glasses.

Fantastic Features

The new Real Black Filter is designed to eliminate glare and provide an incredibly clear image when lights are shining onto the display (i.e. – sun glare during the daytime or house lights during the nighttime). This filter automatically adjusts the image contrast to surpass the amount of light that is being reflected off of the display, thereby clarifying the image regardless of how much reflective light is hitting the screen. The Real Black Filter also allows for true black images in low-light conditions, instead of the grey-black images shown on conventional TVs.

Using the ConnectShare feature you can instantly view digital media from a variety of sources, including USB storage devices and digital cameras.

The SmartTV feature allows you to connect to the internet using the built in Wi-Fi receiver to view content directly from several online media libraries, including YouTube, Hulu, and even social networking sites like Facebook.

With advanced SRS TheaterSound technology you can enjoy detailed surround sound through the two integrated 10W speakers, or you can connect a home theatre system for a more immersive experience.

Like:

With a sturdy, yet fully functional swivel stand, a matching brushed black metal appearance, and a slimmer bezel, the PND7000 is often described as visually appealing.

The included Real Black Filter is one of the most effective glare filters available.

Users have reported stunning 3D imagery from several feet to 20 feet from the display, making the PND7000 an ideal companion to a pair of wireless Samsung 3D active glasses.

The Smart TV feature directs you to online video content and on-demand services to keep you entertained continuously.

While the remote is certainly not as advanced as the controller/keyboard that is included with the PND8000, you do have the option to use your iPhone or another wireless device as the remote control.

Dislike:

Some users have complained about the fact that it is not possible to customize the order of priority for video inputs. For example, it is not possible to disable specific inputs without unplugging them, which would make it easier to scroll between select inputs.

Does not include a built-in web browser or a remote control QWERTY keyboard like the PND8000 series, so internet surfing and chatting may be less enjoyable without the use of an external wireless remote.

Conclusion

While the PN64D7000 is on the upper-end of the price spectrum at $3,399.99, some users have expressed regret in not spending just $300 more to purchase the PN64D8000 (which is listed at $3,799.99). Regardless of whether you choose to purchase the PND7000 or the PND8000, by buying through Amazon you can receive access to the lowest prices, dozens of user reviews, and direct contact to reputable sellers.

Despite the popularity and sales numbers of LCD televisions, they have, for the most part, always failed to match the picture quality of plasmas. The main reason being that due to their backlights, they are unable to produce the high contrast and deep black levels that plasmas are known for. Over the past few years, LED lighting has replaced florescent backlighting in high end LCD sets. However, most of these models feature only edge-lit configurations. While these sets are extremely thin, picture quality isn’t actually improved. LED backlighting really shines when full-array, local dimming technology is used. This is when the LED lights are place behind the screen and are able to be dimmed in small clusters. These kinds of sets are very rare and quite a bit more expensive than edge-lit models.

Sony, Samsung, Vizio and LG have all released local dimming sets in the last few years. Sony has implemented the technology in their top of the line models over the last couple of years and while they come at a high price, they do provide some of the best picture quality of any LCD TVs. Their 2011 follow up to last year’s HX909 series is the Sony Bravia XBR-HX929 series. It is available in 46-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch sizes as follows:
Sony XBR-46HX929 – 46 inches model
Sony XBR-55HX929 – 55 inches model
Sony XBR-65HX929 – 65 inches model (currently available at Amazon with an introductory price of $5,999.99)

The Sony XBR-HX929 has been found to be one of the best-performing LED-based LCDs up to date, as it contends satisfactorily against the leading plasmas in the market. It symbolizes the zenith of LCD picture quality.

Design

The Sony XBR-HX929 features Sony’s monolithic design that they introduced last year.
This series possesses a sleek “monolithic” OptiContrast front panel with extremely tough and lightweight Corning Gorilla Glass and Glossy Screen Finish. This is one of the most attractive sets on the market and when turned off it appears as an elegant black slab. It comes with a low profile rectangular stand that is not only capable of swiveling, but can also tilt the screen back at a slight angle for lower viewing. Thus, it gives HX929 an impression of added compactness.
The panel depth is around an inch and a half but its bezel width of 1.75 inches doesn’t match Samsung’s ultra thin edge-lit sets with a dimension of nearly 1.18 inches. Nevertheless, in general, the Sony has a much classier look.

Features

The highlight of this set is obviously the Intelligent Peak LED backlighting with full-array local dimming which is designed to achieve a near perfect level of contrast.
But it also includes some other high-end features such as the following:

240Hz Enhanced Refresh Rate with Motionflow™ Technology XR-960 for smooth and clear-cut movement detail all through fast-action video.

HX820 series’ built-in Wi-Fi for wireless connection along with built-in Ethernet port for wired network.

X-Reality PRO Engine for analyzing every view then providing sharpened pictures along with remarkable contrast element.

DLNA for accessing and sharing photos, videos and music from PC, Playstation 3 system, network storage and more

Improved and Solid Dejudder processing in Standard mode to enable antiblur.

Brilliant Full HD (1080p) picture quality for 2D & 3D (glasses sold separately).

Wireless BRAVIA Internet TV and Widgets to access Facebook and Twitter as well as premium contents (streaming and applications) like movies, TV shows, videos and music from providers like Qriocity, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Amazon, Gracenote TrackID, CinemaNow, 100 total Yahoo Widgets (as of the moment), Picasa, Photobucket, Shutterfly.

XBR-55HX929’s Skype Ready feature can provide High Definition Skype-to-Skype video calls while at home.

Position Control for adjusting the picture and sound settings in accordance to the position of the viewer.

Distance Alert for detecting the presence of a kid watching the television very near to the screen then producing an audible alert.

Presence Sensor for automatic TV turn off when it doesn’t detect a viewer in the area.

Performance

The XBR-HX929 is the best performing LCD set of recent times. The local dimming creates extremely deep blacks and high contrast. Dark scenes show great detail although there are some blooming effects. This occurs when the screen is showing a bright object against a dark background. However, this appears to be one of the drawbacks of full-array backlighting. When viewed from front and center, the overall picture quality exceeds all but the high end plasmas. On the other hand, the picture suffers some degradation in quality when viewed from an off-angle. Both color accuracy and video processing definitely obtain high marks while this series properly handles 1080p/24 content. Picture uniformity is far superior as compared to that of the many edge-lit sets. Conversely, its glossy glass screen does produce quite a bit of reflections under bright lights.

Conclusion

Sony’s 2011 flagship TV represents the pinnacle of LCD picture quality. Thanks to its local dimming technology, it also rivals high end plasma sets with its inky blacks and superb color and contrast. It has a beautiful design, rich feature set and active shutter 3D. It is also one of the most expensive sets on the market but if price is not a factor, it is a great choice for even the most discerning videophiles.

The Samsung PND6500 series includes 2 models: The PN51D6500 & the PN519D6500 which are identical except the screen size – 51″ & 59″ respectively.
The Samsung Plasma PN51D6500 is a stunning 51-inch, 3D compatible, high-definition plasma television that offers crisp 1080p resolution and a highly immersive viewing experience for a relatively affordable price.

Its other great features include its ultra fast pixel response time of 0.001 ms, 600Hz subfield motion technology, narrow bezel, 1.5-inch depth, Touch of Color design, Cinema Smooth processing and Smart TV with Samsung Apps Internet suite (Picasa, Vudu, YouTube, Facebook, Pandora, Flickr, CinemaNow) together with universal search.

The PN51D6500 is the smaller model in the PND6500 series, with its sibling being the similarly featured 59-inch PN59D6500. With a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, the PN51D6500 provides one of the most impressive displays available on the market within its price range. Since, this series creates a great entry-point for 3D Plasma HDTVs, a crystal-clear image can be attained.

Samsung Plasma D series: D6500 vs. D7000

Is it really the D6500 a more affordable option? Or, is it worth saving some pocket change by not getting the D700?
The D6500, is Samsung “more affordable” alternative to the D7000. It features most of the ‘premium’ features while getting rid of some not so essential characteristics to lessen the load on costumer’s pockets.
Let’s breakdown some of the features they do (and don’t) share:

Most people (even Samsung) don’t realize that the subtle differences do more for the bang of their bucks than they think.
So, let’s get it on!

Dynamic Contrast Ratio (DCR): At first glance it seems there is a huge gap from 15M:1 to 5M:1, the reality is different. The DCR is a measure on how well a display is “capable” of distinguishing between the blackest black and the whitest white, so the TV displays richer blacks and whites. Meanwhile, in theory the bigger this values the better, right? Well, not really. There’s a point of diminishing returns when this value is in the order of millions. So, this may or not be a loss in picture quality, particularly for the untrained eye.

Real Black Filter: Samsung’s fancy name for an ‘anti-glare’ filter that reduces the onscreen glare caused by ambient light, which consequently produces better blacks. Although, it may not sounds like a great addition; anecdotally, people have reported a real ‘improvement’ on bright ambience reflections which in turn improves the blacks quality and contrast.

Bezel design: where the D7000 rocks brushed-titanium, the D6500 uses standard heavy-duty black brushed-plastic.

Speaker’s placement: the D6500 has the speakers placed at the bottom, instead to the sides.

Two missing features for the D6500: Wide Color Enhancer, which provides better hues and BD Wise™ that, displays the best possible resolution when playing Blue-ray discs.

The Price Story

All in all, being that the price gap between these two is quite large (The Samsung PN51D7000 sells for $1,899.99 and the Samsung PN51D6500 sells for $1,299.88 – these are the current prices at Amazon); we should make a balance with the pro’s and con’s, then compare them to our budget.
If you’re going to use your flat on a room or ambient with very to none light, get the D6500; on the contrary, if there’s relatively high or moderate brightness in the room (this is where ‘Real Black Filter’ shines and the ‘DCR’ helps a bit) you should go for the D7000. In my opinion this is the most important aspect when choosing between these two. For really bright rooms or nasty light reflections you may want to consider a LED-LCD TV for a pretty steep price difference though.
All the other extra details are pretty trivial and shouldn’t influence your decision. Albeit, if the stipulated price drop for the D7000 it’s true (maybe to around or less than $200 price difference), I wouldn’t mind shedding some bucks for the ‘extra’ features. Plus, who could resist not paying a bit more for a fancy, yet luxurious, brushed 1”-thick titanium bezel? I know I couldn’t.

3D Thrills at an Affordable Price

The PN51D6500 is one of the most economic options to consider when shopping for a 3D compatible HD plasma. Simply connect an external 3D player (sold separately) and wirelessly sync a pair of Samsung Active 3D glasses (also sold separately), and you’ll be enjoying DVDs, Blue-Ray movies, video games, and even some live broadcast programs three-dimensionally. When you’ve had enough of the jaw-dropping in-your-face action, you can revert the PN51D6500 back to a normal HDTV with the click of a button.

Maximized Viewing Area with Plasma +1

To increase the viewing area of their plasma televisions Samsung has introduced the Plasma +1 feature, which reduces the size of the outer frame by an entire inch, giving you more ‘bang for your buck’. In addition to maximizing viewing space, the new Plasma +1 outer bezel gives the PN51D6500 plasma a much less bulky and more aesthetically pleasing appearance, while also slightly decreasing the weight (only 49.4 pounds without a stand, 59.7 pounds with a stand).
Click here to watch a video about the Samsung Plasma +1 technology.

Superb Streaming Offers Vivid Visuals

Since the PN51D6500 is equipped with Samsung’s powerful 600 Hz Subfield Motion Technology it is able to flash every frame up to 600 times per second, creating incredibly vivid lifelike motions. You’ll be able to enjoy fast-paced movie scenes and watch your favorite sports in high definition without missing a single moment of the action. To complement this the PN51D6500 features a .001ms response time, which completely eliminates motion blur. Individuals that enjoy watching hockey, action movies, and fast-moving aerial high-definition nature shots will most likely find this enhanced streaming most useful.

Serious Surround Sound Puts You in the Heart of the Action

With SRS TheaterSound surround sound technology and 10W x 2 RMS sound output the PN51D6500 provides crisp and clear audio that will make you feel as if you are sitting in your own personal Cinema. Even if you do not have a powerful sound system, the built-in bottom speakers provide incredible audio directly out-of-the-box.

Enjoy Interactive Multimedia with Built-in Wi-Fi, SmartTV and Allshare DNLA Technology

The Samsung PN51D6500′s built-in Wi-Fi receiver allows you to stream data directly from your wireless network with no additional hardware needed. After establishing a connection to the Internet you can enjoy interactive content using integrated Samsung applications that provide direct connectivity to Netflix, Blockbuster, ESPN, YouTube, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and even social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. You can also stream content wirelessly from digital devices that are equipped with AllShare DLNA technology (i.e. – computers, cameras, and smart phones).

Comprehensive Compatibility and Connectivity

The comprehensive compatibility of the PN51D6500 is facilitated by four HDMI inputs, one PC input (D-sub), two USB 2.0 ports, and one component input, all of which let you fully utilize the functionality of the television.

How Does the Samsung Plasma PN51D6500 Compare to Similar Plasmas?

Although the PN51D6500 is slightly larger than its predecessor and incorporates the new plasma +1 bezel, which gives the display a more spacious appearance than its competitors, the bezel is not quite as narrow as those found on the 2011 LED televisions. This year’s edition is similar to the 2010 C7000, however the new PN51D6500 includes a revamped version of the Samsung taps Internet suite, which is now referred to as Smart-TV.

Conclusion

Overall, the Samsung Plasma PN51D6500 provides unparalleled performance and functionality for a price that is virtually unbeatable. In addition to providing all of the aforementioned features for only $1299, the PN51D6500 is Energy Star compliant, which means your carbon foot print will be smaller, and so will your utility bill! If you are looking for an economic entry-level plasma that is 3D compatible, this product may be the ideal solution.

Since Pioneer stopped producing its Kuro Plasmas a few years ago, Panasonics flagship plasma sets have become the new standard for picture quality. Last year’s VT20/25 was considered by many enthusiasts and tech sites as the best performing HDTV of 2010 for both 2D and 3D picture quality. For 2011, Panasonic has revamped their plasma lineup and made many improvements. The VT30 series is their new top of the line set and comes in 55” and 65” sizes. At this review we refer to the Panasonic TC-P65VT30 which is the 65 inch model of the Panasonic TC-P55VT30.

Design

In recent years, design hasn’t been one of the strong points for Panasonic’s plasmas but in 2011 they have slimmed down all models and incorporated an elegant look.

The Panasonic TC-P65VT30 appears more stylish since a thin sliver of silver can be noticed at once alongside the farthest edging to counterbalance the glossy black. It has sharp lines and a clean, minimalist design. Moreover, a small speaker bulge is located along the bottom edge. Nevertheless, this model actually shows a perfect rectangle panel. It has a long panel life of up to 100,000 hours of usage. The VT30′s major design enhancement against the GT30 series is a single pane of glass which fronts the whole panel, getting rid of the depth variation between the frame and the screen. When compared to the VT25, the VT30 has a narrower panel and bezel, although it isn’t quite as sleek as Samsung’s high end plasmas. The stand is rectangular and low profile, but is not able to swivel. Overall, the TC-P65VT30 is understated yet attractive.

Panasonic has also released new 3D glasses that are less bulky, lighter weight and far more appealing than last year’s model. They now have an on/off switch and are also backwards compatible with 2010 TV models. Additionally, the 2010 glasses will still work with 2011 TVs. The Panasonic TC-P65VT30 comes with one pair of 3D glasses.

Features

The Panasonic TC-P65VT30 is a 3D TV and uses active shutter technology. It has THX certification for both 2D and 3D. One feature that separates it from the step down Panasonic PGT30 is its 96hz mode for 1080p/24 content. Other highlights are an included Wi-Fi dongle, DLNA and a new dejudder processing. Panasonic has also revamped its Internet suite. It is now called Viera Connect and has expanded content offerings and a new app store. Available content includes Facebook, Twitter, Shoutcast, Netflix, Skype and Picasa, along with several games.

With VIERA Link, interconnection of the function of various audio and video equipments can be obtained. Those compatible devices can be linked physically thru HDMI cables. The viewer can easily manage those devices by means of the VIERA remote control.

Through its feature Infinite Black Pro 2, improvement to the panel as well as cells aid in regenerating pictures with smooth, normal progression along with deep, rich blacks even if seen under vivid environmental conditions. In films, the accurate, deep blacks realistically express the concept of the movie producers, providing further authority and realism to the viewing experience.

Extra user-menu control selections are being provided by this Panasonic TV model as compared to other competitors. This year, Panasonic has inserted a 10-point grayscale tuning, a developed CMS together with a 10-point luminance correction to focus on gamma.

Performance

The VT30 has been deemed the best overall performing TV of 2011 although very costly. It produces the deepest black levels of any set since the Kuro and has terrific shadow detail. The competing Samsung PND8000 plasma (check on Amazon), which has been thought to give the Panasonic TC-P65VT30 a run for its money, falls short in these categories. Video processing is excellent and picture uniformity is near-perfect. One area where the Samsung proved superior was color accuracy, although the TC-P65VT30 shows brilliance. While not perfect, the mode offers great out of the box picture quality for those who don’t get their set calibrated. Bright room performance isn’t the best, but still can be regarded as first-class for a plasma screen.

The Panasonic TC-PVT30 possesses exceptional overall picture quality, with better black-level performance, extremely fine shadow detail along with precise color points in THX mode.
The new dejudder processing is a “motion smoother” feature that increases the motion resolution but doesn’t have a noticeable effect on blur, which was found to be minimal anyway. 1080p/24 content is also handled properly. 96hz mode also helped at reducing artifacts. 3D performance has also been improved since last year and the result is less crosstalk and greater detail in THX mode. However both Samsung’s high end PND8000 plasma and UND8000 LED handle crosstalk better.

Conclusion

The 2011 Panasonic TC-P65VT30 & Panasonic TC-P55VT30 sets the new standard in terms of picture quality. It edges out the Samsung PND8000 as an overall performer. However, the two sets are quite close and the VT30 is quite a bit pricier. It produces some of the deepest blacks ever seen on plasma, offers a wide range of features, content, and picture adjustments, and has an attractive design. 3D quality has improved since last year but it falls short of some of the competition. It lives up to the high standard that Panasonic has set in past years and is a great choice for anyone looking for a top of the line TV set that puts the bar for performance.

Samsung has become an industry leader in the HDTV market over the last decade. They are the second highest seller of televisions in the United States and are always on the cutting edge of technology. Samsung was the first to release edge-lit LED LCD televisions and are still continuing to bring innovation to the market. Their most elite high-end LED-lit LCD model for 2011 is the UND8000, a 3D television set with local dimming technology. The UND8000 series is available in the 46″, 55″, 60″ and 65″ models.

Design

Samsung has consistently been appreciated for some of the most attractive HDTVs every year because their products are incredibly slim and have a modern look about them which separates them from the HDTV sets manufactured by other brands. This year, they have taken their minimalist design a step further with the UND8000 wherein this series shows a distinctive, visually striking layout which lessens the edging around the panel, as they have incorporated a nearly “all-picture” look with a bezel that is only 0.2 inch thick. For the 55” model, the distance from the edge of the image to the edge of its screen comes with a measurement of 0.375 inch.

To realize how astonishing it really looks, one must see it in person and it arguably is the best looking HDTV yet. At first, the picture may seem to be floating in thin air due to the barely visible nature of the chrome bezel. The panel itself is only 1.2” deep and the set almost disappears when viewed from the side. Samsung has stuck with the four-legged chrome stand from last year’s high end sets, but personally, I am not the biggest fan of the stand; however, it does match the chrome bezel. Samsung has set a new standard in terms of design, making other HDTVs look downright bulky.

Features

Samsung have packed the UND8000 with a long list of features. One thing that really sets the 8000 series apart from lower end edge-lit models is its local dimming capability which Samsung has named as “micro-dimming”. This allows different zones of the picture on the screen to be controlled individually in order to create greater contrast, deeper blacks, precise color, brilliant visual processing, as well as enhanced 3D image quality. Samsung has stuck with the active shutter 3D technology and to take advantage of that, two pairs of 3D glasses now come bundled with the UND8000 series TV sets. However, you should check about the availability of the 3D glasses before you actually make the purchase because the 3D glasses are only available as long as the stocks last.

Other features include a 240Hz refresh rate, dejudder processing, built-in Wi-Fi, web browser and apps. In 2011, Samsung has introduced “SmartTV”, that allows you to search for content across the app store, the web and your own home network through the Smart Hub Internet Portal. Popular options include Yahoo Widgets, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, games and many more. At the moment, apps that are missing in this series are Yahoo Weather, Finance, News, Flickr, and Twitter. Most probably, the latest “Yahoo Hot Apps” option shows optimism that additional applications are to come soon.

However, the UI of the Smart Hub is not user friendly and the included search option is a waste of time. The new double-sided Bluetooth keyboard with a screen can be both used as a standard remote device as well as a QWERTY keyboard to help you navigate through the Web browser.

Performance

The UND8000 offers one of the most detailed 2D and 3D picture adjustment suites allowing for some very personalized customizations. Color accuracy and black levels are excellent as the UND8000 produces some of the brightest, high contrast pictures and some of the deepest blacks that you will see on any LCD TV.

This series offers three local dimming (Smart LED) settings as well as Cinema Black setting. The latter serves as an automatic control to dim the letterbox bar part of a motion picture with an aspect ratio format of 2.35:1.

It also excels at motion processing and allows very little motion blurring while also handling 24p content with ease. However, the UND8000 has a serious issue with picture uniformity. The deep black levels and accurate colors tend to diminish towards the edges of the picture. Fine points in shades were unclear to some extent due to poor off-angle viewing while the smooth panel mirrors several ambient lights. This is common among edge-lit LED sets but the problem seems to be worse with the UND8000 series than with lower model Samsung sets. This could be due to the nature of its extreme design. While the middle of the picture looks excellent, there is a noticeable difference with the rest of the picture, especially during dark scenes. In addition, vertical and horizontal banding can occur at times while playing certain content.

3D performance in the UND8000 series has improved so drastically (especially when compared to last year’s models) that it has even surpassed the performance of high end plasma sets. However, the 3D glasses from 2010 won’t work on the 2011 models as they are not inter-compatible. Cross-talk has been greatly reduced while contrast and black levels are both excellent. Power consumption by the UND8000 is also appreciably low.

Conclusion

The Samsung UND8000 is without a doubt the most visually stunning HDTV on the market today. It also offers a very complete and compelling set of features like SmartTV, which provides a wide variety of content in a convenient format. Its picture quality can be outstanding, with deep blacks, great contrast and accurate colors. 3D quality has also been significantly improved. For its price however, the poor picture uniformity is a big downfall. Ultimately, the UND8000 has many great features, but its overall picture performance doesn’t quite match up to its stunning looks.

Panasonic has been the industry leader in plasma televisions over the last few years. Their sets are consistently rated among the best HDTVs and their top of the line plasma models have been viewed as benchmark TVs. The 2011 ST30 series is their lowest end 3D plasma and comes in the following models:

Panasonic TC-P42ST30 – 42 inch model

Panasonic TC-P46ST30 – 46 inch model

Panasonic TC-P50ST30 – 50 inch model

Panasonic TC-P55ST30 – 55 inch model

Panasonic TC-P60ST30 – 60 inch model

Panasonic TC-P65ST30 – 65 inch model

When comparing the Panasonic TC-PST30 to the higher-priced GT30, the former gave out better gamma, but similar black levels. It did lose some color saturation and brightness, though. Meanwhile, the accuracy of its color was a setback competing with the likes of LG and Samsung.

Design

For 2011 Panasonic has revamped their plasma line up. The designs are sleeker with sharper edges and a more minimalistic look. Overall they appear much more modern and cleaner than last year’s sets. The ST30 has a dark frame and an understated look that will go with any décor. The panel is 2.2” deep which while being slimmer than previous Panasonics, isn’t quite as thin as Samsung’s offerings. It comes with a low profile stand that is capable of swiveling.

Features

Panasonic continues to use active shutter technology in their second generation full HD 3D plasmas. The ST30 series is their least expensive to include 3D. However, glasses are not included with the set and Panasonic is still charging around $150 per pair. (Note that last year’s glasses are compatible and due to Samsung recently dropping the price of their glasses to $50, it is speculative that Panasonic may follow suit.)

This year Panasonic has expanded their video streaming services and array of applications. It is now called Viera Connect and includes Amazon streaming, Netflix, Skype, Pandora, Twitter, Facebook and You Tube. A variety of games are also available. Other prominent features are a Wi-Fi dongle, anti-reflective filter, and “Motion Smooth” dejudder processing.

The Panasonic TC-PST30 has two HDMI’s on the rear and one on the side panel. While it lacks any VGA inputs, it does carry two USB ports and an SD card slot on the side panel.

Performance

The ST30 has excellent overall picture quality. Although picture controls aren’t very extensive, it produces very deep blacks and high contrast. It lacks the THX mode of the step up GT30 series and color accuracy could be better. It performs highly in terms of video processing and correctly handles 1080P/24 content. The Motion Smooth feature successfully eliminates judder but does produce the soap opera video effect. Bright room image quality has improved and blacks and colors remain more consistent under ambient light. Off angle viewing and picture uniformity are also top notch.

In terms of 3D quality, Panasonic seems to have reduced the amount of crosstalk and flicker compared to last year’s models. However, blacks and colors do tend to wash out a bit when compared to brighter LED lit LCD sets. A dark room is still a necessity when it comes to viewing 3D content on a plasma screen.

Here is a video review by CNET:

Conclusion

The Panasonic ST30 series hits a sweet spot in terms of price and performance. Its new design is an improvement over past Panasonic plasmas and the overall picture quality is excellent. Its ability to handle fast motion and video processing capabilities, along with deep blacks and great contrast make it an all around performer. Throw in an easy to use internet suite with lots of content and improved 3D capability and this set is the complete package for someone who doesn’t want to break the bank.
