Samsung PND7000 Review

The PND7000 series is the former Samsung flagship selection which includes three models:
Samsung PN51D7000 – 51 inches
Samsung PN59D7000 – 59 inches
Samsung PN64D7000 – 64 inches

PND7000 VS. PND8000

While each of the PND7000 models are relatively similar, there are some significant differences between the PND7000 and the new PND8000 series:

  • The PND8000 has a swiveling chrome quad-shaped stand, while the stand for the PND7000 series has a rectangular base that is easier to maneuver and is more aesthetically pleasing to some people. Thus, the PND8000 series may be more ideal for wall mounting, while the PND7000 series may be more suited for use with the stand.
  • The PND7000 series does not include 3D glasses, while the PND8000 series includes 2 free pair. However, these glasses are not always included in the box, so sometimes they must be claimed online through Samsung’s website after purchasing the television, similarly to a rebate.
  • Another difference is the Dynamic Contrast Ratio which stands on 25,000,000:1 on the PND8000 series and only 15,000,000:1 on the PND7000. However for the common untrained eye, this factor is not noticeable.
  • The PND8000 has an upgraded remote that is not sold with the PND7000, which includes a flip-over QEWRTY keyboard and a plethora of new functions.
  • The PND8000 also has the capability to interface with an optional Skype camera, and includes an integrated proprietary web browser, both of which are not included in the PND7000 series.
  • Unlike the PND7000 series, the PND8000 televisions include a new feature called Local Contrast Enhancer (LCE), which automatically adjusts the contrast of various areas of the display independently to provide an optimal picture on every part of the screen.

Simplified Design

While many 3D plasmas are incorporating complex design schemes and oddly shaped stands, the Samsung PND7000 retains a classic stand design that is sturdy and easy to set up. The color of the bezel is an illustrious Brushed Metal, which has been kept the same in the PND8000 series. The PND7000 appears to be more spacious than other 64” models because of the new Samsung Plus One design, which offers a slimmer bezel, thereby increasing the usable area of the display.

Enjoyable 2D & 3D Performance

The PND7000 provides a full 1080p HD viewing experience, which is complimented by 600hz subfield motion technology that facilitates enhanced pixel responses and screen refreshes to provide optimal performance during fast-paced scenes. With a mega dynamic contrast ratio of 15,000,000:1 and an incredible response time of only 0.001ms, you’re guaranteed to catch every moment of the action without any motion blur. The PND7000 can quickly be converted into a 3D powerhouse that will let you enjoy Blu-Ray movies, video games, and even television programing in 3D using a pair of Samsung active 3D glasses.

Fantastic Features

  • The new Real Black Filter is designed to eliminate glare and provide an incredibly clear image when lights are shining onto the display (i.e. – sun glare during the daytime or house lights during the nighttime). This filter automatically adjusts the image contrast to surpass the amount of light that is being reflected off of the display, thereby clarifying the image regardless of how much reflective light is hitting the screen. The Real Black Filter also allows for true black images in low-light conditions, instead of the grey-black images shown on conventional TVs.
  • Using the ConnectShare feature you can instantly view digital media from a variety of sources, including USB storage devices and digital cameras.
  • The SmartTV feature allows you to connect to the internet using the built in Wi-Fi receiver to view content directly from several online media libraries, including YouTube, Hulu, and even social networking sites like Facebook.
  • With advanced SRS TheaterSound technology you can enjoy detailed surround sound through the two integrated 10W speakers, or you can connect a home theatre system for a more immersive experience.

Like:

  • With a sturdy, yet fully functional swivel stand, a matching brushed black metal appearance, and a slimmer bezel, the PND7000 is often described as visually appealing.
  • The included Real Black Filter is one of the most effective glare filters available.
  • Users have reported stunning 3D imagery from several feet to 20 feet from the display, making the PND7000 an ideal companion to a pair of wireless Samsung 3D active glasses.
  • The Smart TV feature directs you to online video content and on-demand services to keep you entertained continuously.
  • While the remote is certainly not as advanced as the controller/keyboard that is included with the PND8000, you do have the option to use your iPhone or another wireless device as the remote control.

Dislike:

  • Some users have complained about the fact that it is not possible to customize the order of priority for video inputs. For example, it is not possible to disable specific inputs without unplugging them, which would make it easier to scroll between select inputs.
  • Does not include a built-in web browser or a remote control QWERTY keyboard like the PND8000 series, so internet surfing and chatting may be less enjoyable without the use of an external wireless remote.

Conclusion

While the PN64D7000 is on the upper-end of the price spectrum at $3,399.99, some users have expressed regret in not spending just $300 more to purchase the PN64D8000 (which is listed at $3,799.99). Regardless of whether you choose to purchase the PND7000 or the PND8000, by buying through Amazon you can receive access to the lowest prices, dozens of user reviews, and direct contact to reputable sellers.
