Samsung’s 6400 series is a mid-range LED LCD TV line for 2011. It is also their least expensive LCD set to include 3D. It utilizes LED edge-lit backlighting and is available in 40”, 46’, 55” and 60” sizes.

Design

Samsung’s LED LCD sets have always been some of the slimmest and sleekest sets on the market. For 2011 they took their compact designs to the next level. The UN46D6400 TV is only 1.2 inches deep and has a very slim bezel that’s less than in inch wide. Not quite as minute as the 7000 or 8000 series, but this is still a very attractive TV. It features a flat, rectangular stand with a clear mount that is capable of swiveling.

Features

In addition to LED edge-lighting, the UN46D6400 also includes 1080p resolution, active 3D with 2D to 3D conversion, 120hz refresh rate, DLNA capability and Smart TV with Samsung Apps. (Note: Samsung recently announce that all of their 3D TVs with now come with two pairs of glasses).

Samsung’s new Smart Hub has a simple menu system that allows the user to easily search for movies, shows and video over multiple services and connected devices. The app offering is quite extensive and includes Blockbuster, ESPN, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Facebook.

Performance

The D6400 has been found to be one of the better-performing edge-lit LED sets on the market. It delivers accurate colors and solid black-levels. Like many edge-lit sets it has sub-par picture uniformity and poor off-angle viewing. Also, its glossy screen can create a great deal of reflection in a bright environment. It has received good marks for its video processing and ability to handle fast motion and 1080p/24 content.

For 2011, Samsung has improved its 3D performance by reducing the amount of crosstalk that was apparent in last year’s models. It produces a bright 3D picture with great detail and contrast. Cnet states that it has the best 3D performance of any 2011 TV they have tested so far which includes a Panasonic plasma set. It should be noted that Samsung’s 2011 model active-shutter glasses now use Bluetooth to sync to the TV. While this provides a more reliable connection, last year’s glasses aren’t compatible with this year’s TVs and vice versa.
