Sony Bravia EX720 Review

The EX720 is the highest model in Sony’s Bravia 2011 EX Essential series. It is also their least expensive series to include 3D. The EX720 uses Edge LED backlighting and is available in 32”, 40”, 46’, 55” and 60” sizes.

Design

For 2011, Sony has slimmed down all of their LED Edge-lit LCD models. Last year’s models had a rectangular panel that bulged out to accommodate the inputs but this year’s models have a flatter back and are consistently slim throughout. The EX720 has a minimalist look with a glossy black bezel and a textured black strip across the bottom. It has a wide, low-profile rectangular stand and overall classy and attractive look. It may not be as thin or have the ultra-slim bezel as some of the new Samsung models, but the EX720 has a nice, elegant design.

Features

In addition to the Edge LED Backlighting, the EX720 also includes 1080p resolution, 3D capability, Sony’s Motionflow 240hz technology, and Bravia Internet Video. Sony has quite the extensive offering of internet apps and streaming video services. They include Netflix, Pandora, Skype, Facebook, YouTube, Hulu Plus, Twitter and many more. Sony also has its own music and movie streaming service called Qriocity. Another change for this year is Sony’s new video processing engine which is called X-Reality. It is stated to analyze video content to create the sharpest picture quality possible.

Performance

The EX720 has been found to have good picture quality and produces accurate, sharp colors. It has the high video processing performance that Sony is known for and handles 1080p/24 material properly. Some negatives, inherent among many Edge-lit sets, are black level performance and picture uniformity (the edges appearing brighter than the rest of the picture). However, this set gets high marks for performance in bright rooms (thanks to the matte screen) and energy efficiency. Also, reviewers state that Sony’s motion processing technology works better than most other brands.

In terms of 3D, all Sony TVs use active-shutter technology and their 3D performance has been reviewed has the best among LCD sets. Sony’s technology tends to produce less flicker and crosstalk than 3D TVs from other brands. However, the 3D quality isn’t quite as good when compared to 3D plasma televisions.
